Autumn 1

English

This term we have been reading Ug and Cave Baby. We have used these 2 books to as a base for our writing. We looked at instruction writing, and we wrote our own Stone Age recipes. Anyone fancy a mammoth pizza? We wrote scripts for Stone Age cookery shows which we acted out.

Maths

This term we have been using our place value skills to partition 3-digit numbers, number bonds and known number facts to help solve tricky calculations and addition and subtraction. We have also learned about 2D shapes and how to calculate perimeter. We looked at data handling and we made and interpreted information from bar charts.

Science

This term we have been looking at rocks and soils. We have learned about the 3 different types of rocks; igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. We became rock detectives and carried out experiments to see if rocks were permeable or impermeable and we have studied how fossils are formed.

History

We have been learning about the Stone Age and how life changed for people during the Stone Age. We have looked at anachronisms and how we must be careful to get our information from reliable sources. We have learned about how we find out about things that happened such a long time ago.

Geography

We have been studying mountains. We have looked at where mountains are found and how they are formed. We have studied famous mountains on Earth but also on Mars and why these mountains are famous.

Computing

We have been learning how to code. We have learned how to input commands to carry out challenges using Purple Mash.

Art and Design

We have used charcoal and chalks to create Stone Age pictures. We looked at real Stone Age cave art and tried to recreate it ourselves.

P.E.

We have been learning the skills needed for invasion games. We have looked at defending, attacking, ball skills and control. We have looked at how these skills are used in football, netball and basketball.

Autumn 2

English

This half term we have been reading Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. We have used this book as a base for our writing. We used our inference skills to predict what the story could be about from the front cover. We also asked questions of the characters and gave advice of what they should do next. We wrote letters from the Stone Age to our parents imagining we were there. Our writing focus has been to use complex sentences and commas to separate a subordinate clause from a main clause. We have looked at paragraphs and included them in our letters.

Maths

This half term we have been developing our multiplication and division skills. We are becoming more confident with our knowledge of the 3 and 4 times tables and improving our recall skills. We have enjoyed using Times Tables Rock Stars to help with this. We have used our skills to help solve multiplication and division problems. We have looked at 3D shapes and their properties and sorted them using Venn diagrams. We looked at addition and subtraction. We used known facts to help solve 3 digit calculations. We used our reasoning skills to solve puzzles.

Science

This term we have continued to look at rocks and soils. We have learned how soil was formed and the components that make it up. We used magnifying glasses to examine soil samples and we sorted the component parts we found into living things, not living now and never living. We researched about the Victorian scientist, Mary Anning and how important she was in the understanding of fossils.

History

We have continued to learn about the Stone Age and how life changed for people during the Stone Age. We have looked at how archaeologists discoveries tell about life in the past. We have seen how life changed for Sone Age people from the Old to the New Stone Age. We have learnt about the jobs that were done in a Stone Age camp and we empathised with Stone Age people as we wrote a diary about life in Stone Age times.

Geography

This half term, we have continued studying mountains. We looked at how mountain ranges are formed and used maps and atlases to find the some of the largest mountain ranges in the world. We used maps and atlases to find the names of the continents where the mountain ranges were located. We used our skills as geographers to work out why some mountains ranges look very different to others.

Computing

We have been learning how to code. We have learned how to input commands to carry out challenges using Purple Mash.

Art and Design

We have been looking at line, form and shade. We used charcoal, chalks and pastels to draw fossils. We used our observation skills to carefully look at and then draw the fossils. We created light areas by using rubbers to rub out some of the charcoal and also white chalk over the charcoal. We practised blending colours using the coloured chalk pastels.

P.E.

We have continued to learn the skills needed for invasion games. We have looked at defending, attacking, ball skills and control. We looked at how these skills are used in football, netball and basketball. We have also been improving our dance skills by learning 3 street dances. We learnt a variety of steps and moved to the rhythm of the music.

Design Technology

This half term we made products for the school Christmas Fair. In Avengers we designed and made hot chocolate jars. We researched different designs to give use our ideas and then we designed our own version. We chose our ingredients and completed our festive designs. When we had finished we evaluated how success our designs had been and what things we would change for next time.

Spring 1

English

This half term we have been looking at fables and using them as a base for our writing. We used our inference skills to imagine what the characters in the fables could be thinking in key scenes. We used our drama skills to act out a variety of fables. We looked for key features in all the fables we studied and we tried to write alternate morals. Our punctuation focus has been to speech marks and synonyms for said. We tried to include direct speech when we wrote our own fables which we put together into a class book.

Maths

This half term we have been studying time. We learnt how many days were in each month and we learnt a way to work it out using our knuckles! We studied how many days in a year, minutes in an hour, seconds in a minute and hours in a day. We also looked at Roman numerals.  We practised how to tell the time on digital and analogue clocks up to quarter to and quarter past the hour. We have continued to enjoy using Times Tables Rock Stars to help us learn the times tables. We studied fractions and ordered fractions with the same denominator, found fractions of shapes and fractions of amounts.

Science

This term we have started a new topic of animals including humans. We have looked at different food groups, nutrients in food and what they do for our bodies. We have studied the human skeleton and we began to name the bones that make it up. We have looked at how baby animals grow and develop and what humans and other animals need to survive.

History

We have continued to learn about the Stone Age and how life changed for people during the Stone Age. We have looked at how archaeologists discoveries tell about life in the past and the difference between historical fact and supposition. We used facts and supposition about the discovery of the Red Lady of Paviland to write our own myth.

Geography

This half term, we have continued studying mountains. We have continued to develop our skills as geographers by looking at ordinance survey maps and identifying what the symbols represent. We also learnt how to draw a climate graph for Burnley and the Cumbrian mountain region in Wales. We looked at what life is like in the Cumbrian mountains and the problems you may face running a farm in that area.

Computing

We have been sharpening up our typing skills through the games on the 2type programme on Purple Mash.

Art and Design

We have been looking at printing techniques. We linked this to our science topic and we studied fruit and vegetables. We made observational drawings using oil pastels. We looked very carefully at the shape and colours of the fruit and vegetables and then drew them on white and black backgrounds to see which made the most impact. We made our own scratch pictures and finally we made our own printing blocks. We made a fruit or vegetable design on our block and then used it to create a repeated pattern.

P.E.

We have been improving our gymnastic techniques this half term. We have practised balances, different ways of travelling and jumping. We worked with partners to create a sequence that we could both perform. We also practised these techniques on the apparatus in the hall.

Religious Education

In RE this half term we have been looking at Christianity and what Christians mean by the Holy Spirit. We looked at the story of the Pentecost and how Christians might celebrate it. We looked at what skills, talents and qualities exist in our communities and how we can best share our own talents and attributes.
