Autumn Term 1 2016
Our Learning so far:
In class, we are learning about Diary entries. As part of this, we have been reading extracts from Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Diary of a Killer Cat and identifying the features included in a diary. We can now use these features to write our own diary entries.
Later in this term, we will be reading a wide range of fairy tales and basing our writing around these to create short narratives.
In Maths the children have been looking at place value and number facts and have used these to help develop techniques to add and subtract in their heads. The children have also focused on shape and measure problems, including working practically to measure the perimeter of different objects and places.
Our focus in Science has been plants. The children are now able to identify the different parts of a plant and explain their functions. We have also looked at the factors which help a plant to grow and carried out an investigation to test this.
In topic we have focused on the Stone Age. We have spent our afternoons as archaeologists, digging through old boxes and trays to discover different artefacts left behind from the Stone Age. We have also spent time comparing different aspects of our lives to the life of a Stone Age person. The class are really looking forward to creating our own cave paintings later this term.
In RE this term, we are looking at different religious celebrations. We are currently learning about Divali and discussing how taking part in worship and celebrations can bring us closer to our faith.
Later, we will be learning about the celebration of Christmas and how it links to the Christian faith. We will also be talking about whether religion is the most important aspect in everyone’s lives.
Autumn Term 2 2016
This half term, we have been looking at newspaper reports. As a class, we have a read a range of reports from newspapers and the internet and have now written our own report using the required features.
For our reports we had to gather information from different sources so we used our questioning skills to interview different people.
In Maths, the children have been looking at multiplication and division. They have worked well to apply their knowledge of their times tables to solve problems with larger numbers using more complicated written methods. The children have also focused on shape and time. They have learnt about 3D shapes and their nets and have created a range of shapes using these nets.
Our focus in Science has been rocks and soils. We have looked at different types of rock and compared them by shape, texture and whether or not they are natural rocks. We have learnt in a variety of ways and carried out several investigations to improve our practical skills when learning scientifically.
We have also been studying fossils and how they are formed. Early this term we became palaeontologists and uncovered different fossils and looked at their features.
In RE this term, the children have been focussing on Christianity. They have learnt about the celebration of Christmas and how it links to the Christian faith.
Every Thursday, over the Autumn term, Year 3 have been learning outdoor as part of a forest schools project. They have learnt a variety of skills and enjoyed a wide range of activities.
Spring term 2 2017
This half term, we have been looking at persuasive letters. We have looked at a range of persuasive techniques, through reading different letters and watching adverts. We are now able to apply these techniques to our own letters. We have based our letters on healthy eating which links to our science topic.
In Maths, the children have been looking at shapes and angles. They have been learning about what angles are and finding right angles around the classroom. The children have also focused on fractions. We have learnt how to find fractions of shapes and fractions of amounts, as well as ordering and comparing fractions.
Our focus in Science has been forces and magnets. We have experimented with magnets and materials to see which materials are magnetic. We have also investigated the strength of magnets and recorded our results scientifically.
In RE this term, the children have been focussing on Christianity. They have learnt about the Easter story which we have been working on through our Easter performance.
In the afternoons, we have been learning how to use a map. We have looked at grid references and learnt how to use a key. At the end of the topic, we took a walk through Townley Park and drew a map using the physical and human features that we passed.
In our history topic, we have learnt about different time periods and compared the similarities and differences. We have had a dig in the field and found different artefacts.
Summer term 2017
This term, we have been looking at non-chronological reports. We have looked at a range of features used in reports and researched information about the Romans. We are now able to use these features and this information to set out and write our own non-chronological reports.
In Maths, the children have been looking at time. We have been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock and change it into digital time. We have also continued to practice our column addition and subtraction, applying these to real life problems.
Our focus in Science has been skeletons and the human body. We have learnt about the scientific vocabulary used in this topic and we have applied our understanding to come up with and carry out our own investigations linked with the human body.
In the afternoons, we have been learning about the Romans. We have compared how they lived and how we live today and have mainly focused on the Roman army. We have discussed, as a class, how Roman soldiers would have dealt with being in the Roman army and being away from their families.
