English
This term in English we have been reading The Lost Happy Endings. We have looked at the common themes in Fairy Tales and read some alternative ones as well. We picked out key language in the story to help us draw what the evil witch looks like and explored what often happens to evil characters in fairy tales. We then wrote our own alternative ending to Little Red Riding Hood to make it an unhappy ending. We wrote poems to describe the two main characters in Lost Happy Endings and wrote our own version of the ending by predicting what would happen next after Jub, the main character, found a magical golden pen.
Maths
In this term’s maths we have been focusing on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. We have looked at the patterns in numbers when adding or subtracting 100s, 10s and 1s. We have then used this knowledge add and subtract using the column method.
History
In history we have continued to look at the Iron Age and what artefacts from that time tell us about the lives of Iron Age people. We have focused on how we know the Iron Age was not peaceful and the importance of primary evidence.
Geography
For our Geography we have been continuing to look at megacities and why so many people live in them. We have looked at Baghdad in 925AD and why it was able to become the first city in the world to have 1 million inhabitants. Finally, we looked at the advantages and disadvantages of living in a city.
DT
This term we have been working on our sewing skills. We have practiced our running stich, cross stitch and how to sew two pieces of fabric together. We than used these skills to design and make our own cushions by cutting out paper templates, drawing around them onto our fabric and sewing the pieces together.
RE
This term we have been looking at the question ‘Has Christmas lost it’s true meaning?’. We have explored what Christmas means to ourselves and others, watched a video explaining the Christmas story and learnt why Christmas is so important to Christians. Finally, we thought about what gift we would give to the world to make it a better place and made this out of clay.
Science
In science we have been investigating rocks. We have looked at how metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks are formed and some of their properties including testing how porous some rocks are. We also learnt about Mary Anning and how important her work was to the field of palaeontology and how fossils are formed.
Computing
In computing we have been using different software to create 3D designs. We had to use a grid to recreate shape and structures accurately. We created a digital city that could withstand flooding and looked at how to use different tools to build, change and manipulate our designs.
Music
This half term we had the challenge of performing as a class ensemble in this year’s KS2 Christmas Carol Service at St. Stephen’s Church. We rose to this challenge with Deacon singing the first verse as a solo. We learnt the lyrics to the chosen Christmas Carols and sang beautifully to our audience of parents and carers. We then sang at our whole school Christingle Service St. Catherine’s Church. We have also had the opportunity to listen to and sing along to the brass band Play It Forward live.
PSHE
In PSHE we have been focusing on difference and why it should be valued. We have looked at how we and our families may be similar or different to others. We have talked about what it means to show respect to others’ differences and why being different is good. Finally, we have learnt that bullying may happen because someone is different and how we can help prevent this happening.
