English
This half term, we have been reading Wolves by Emily Gravett. We read and enjoyed the book and used the book as a base for our writing. We developed our use of inverted commas for speech, adverbs to add detail and expanded noun phrases. We also learnt to identify the main and subordinate clause within a sentence, and used subordinating conjunctions to write our own complex sentences. We wrote our own alternative ending to the story and a poem all about wolves. The book was full of facts about wolves and we used these and the internet to continue our research. We then wrote our own non-chronological report about wolves.
Maths
In maths, we have worked hard to develop our ability to count in 3’s, 4’s and 8’s. We have then used this to extend our understanding of multiplication by using partitioning to multiply 2-digit by 1-digit numbers. We also showed understanding of division and used flexible partitioning to divide 2-digit by 1-digit numbers. We have also looked at measuring in centimetres and millimetres and learnt how to read the scale on a ruler. Furthermore, we have learnt how to measure the volume of liquid in a container in millilitres.
Science
This term we have started our plant topic. We have looked at the jobs the different parts of a plant have as well as setting up experiments to investigate how the stem works. First, we used tissue paper in water to observe how the water can move up the tissue through the process of osmosis. We then placed plants with white petals into red coloured water and predicted that the petals would turn red as osmosis would occur up the xylem of the stem like it did through the tissue. We also went out to pull out weeds and studied the roots closely under a microscope. We have also begun to name the different parts of a flower.
History
In history, we have begun our inquiry into the Iron Age. We have discussed why this era is known as the iron age. We have looked closely at the hill forts that remain in Britain today and learnt about what they would have looked like back then, what the roundhouses would have been made out of and what they would have had inside, and how the iron age people built and used their hill forts to defend themselves.
Computing
In computing, we have been learning how to use the internet safely. We have discussed the dangers in sharing personal information and photos online, and to report anything that we see online that is upsetting to us. We’ve also talked about the difference between online and offline friends, and the information that we can share privately with offline friends, that can’t be shared with online friends.
Design Technology
We have been learning all about seasonal fruits and vegetables. We learnt that certain fruits and vegetables can only grow in different places in the world depending on the climate there or the temperature. We talked about the advantages and disadvantages of eating fruits and vegetables that are grown locally and researched some of these. After the holidays we will be using this information to make seasonal tarts.
PE
In PE, we have been learning gymnastic skills. We have learnt to perform different balances both on our own and with a partner. We have also learnt to do pencil and teddy bear rolls, and some have demonstrated aided or un-aided forward rolls. Also, we have demonstrated good pencil, tuck and star jumping skills, with flexible bent knees to land on. Furthermore, we have begun to perform all of the above on and off different apparatus in the hall.
Spanish
In Spanish, we have been able to name and label a variety of fruits. We learnt that all nouns are either masculine (un) or feminine (una).
PSHE
In PSHE, we have been learning all about how to stay healthy. We discussed what we can do to stay healthy, what consists of a balanced diet, and were shocked to find out how much sugar is in some of our favourite foods. We also learnt what a ‘drug’ is and that some are legal and even make us better but some are illegal. We learnt what to do if we ever come across illegal drugs.
RE
In RE, we have been learning about the lead up to Good Friday, in order to answer the question, “What is good about Good Friday?” We learnt about why Jesus had the Last Supper, who the characters are in this story and what the pre-story was to it. We then learnt about how Jesus was crucified. We looked at some of the symbolism within the stories and what they represent.
