English
This half term we have been looking at The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. We read this novel and used it as a base for our writing. We explored the novel through activities such as reader’s theatre, drama and art. We looked at subordinating conjunctions and we tried to include this sentence structure in our own writing. We learnt about writing in paragraphs and we applied this when we wrote diaries in role as Hogarth.
Maths
This term we have been looking at mass, length and capacity. We have studied the units of measurement, converted into various units and read a variety of scales. We have used our addition and subtraction skills to solve problems involving measures as well. The children have had weekly times tables tests to keep their skills sharp. We have also practised our times tables skills on Times Tables Rock Stars. We have been focussing on the 3 and 4 times tables so far.
Science
This half term, we have continued to learn about plants. We set up experiments to see what plants need to survive and the effect of not having those things has on the plants. We have studied the processes of pollination and fertilisation as well as looking at the life cycle of plants.
Geography
This term’s enquiry was ‘Why do some earthquakes cause more damage than others?’ We used atlases to locate the areas where earthquakes occur. We studied what causes earthquakes and why the largest earthquakes don’t always cause the most devastation. We looked at the factors involved.
Computing
This half term we have been learning about simulations. We learnt that a computer simulation can represent real and imaginary situations. We explored a simulation and the children used a simulation to try out different options and to test predictions. We used two different simulations. We used the Locked Out simulation and The Dark Sided of Elpmis.
Art and Design
This half term, we have studying the artist Georgia O Keefe. We looked at several of her famous works of art and we used pastels to try to match up the colours by blending. We also improved our painting techniques and then used these skills to try to copy some of her artwork. Then in our final piece we put it all together and painted a flower in the style of Georgia O Keefe.
P.E.
We have been learning the skills involved in athletics activities. We practised throwing techniques for javelin, shot put and discus. We also improved our running and jumping techniques for long distance as well as sprints and hurdles. We have also had swimming lessons this half term. We have been working on building up our confidence in the water, kicking our legs and scooping the water with our hands.
Music
The Avengers have been building on their formal notation knowledge by clapping and playing – crochets, minims and semi-breves. We have talked about time signature, how the 4/4 tells us there are 4 beats in bar.
We have played What’s Up and Strictly D on the glockenspiels. We practiced holding the beaters lightly and having a bouncy action when striking the bars.
