This term, the Year 6 students delved into the captivating world of Phillip Pullman’s Clockwork. Split into three key parts, the story intricately intertwined to keep the children engaged. They thoroughly enjoyed predicting how the different parts would connect, showcasing their critical thinking skills. Furthermore, the students closely analysed Pullman’s masterful use of language to set the eerie tone of the story, enhancing their comprehension and appreciation of the text. As part of their learning journey, the students meticulously crafted a recount of the second part, incorporating all the grammar and punctuation skills expected of a Year 6 writer.
Maths
This term in Maths, we have covered a range of interesting topics to develop our understanding and skills. We learned about Position and Movement, where students excelled in plotting coordinates on a grid, as well as reflecting and translating shapes. Ratio was another key focus, with students learning how to comprehend and work with ratios effectively. They engaged in solving various problems that involved ratios using bar models, further enhancing their mathematical abilities. Additionally, in Statistics, students learned how to calculate the mean of a set of data, honing their data analysis skills.
Science
This term, we studied the fascinating world of living things and their habitats. We explored microorganisms, uncovering how these tiny creatures can both cause harm and provide benefits. Furthermore, we engaged in classifying plants and animals using keys, enhancing our understanding of the diverse species around us.
History
This term, the children investigated the history of the British Empire. They compared a 1921 map with a modern atlas to spot the countries once part of the Empire. By exploring historical sources, they discovered the motivations behind Britain’s pursuit of an empire. The students then pooled their findings to craft their own comprehensive explanations. Exciting discoveries were made, leading to deeper insights into this important period of history.
Geography
This term, we learned about the effects of climate change on the people of The Gambia. Pupils explored how erratic weather patterns can devastate farming, leading to poverty in this developing nation. Our discussions highlighted the real-world consequences of climate change, enhancing understanding of its global impact. Through this topic, students have gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by communities in different parts of the world.
Computing
This term, our Computing lessons have been all about diving into the world of technology past, present, and future. The children have been busy creating impressive PowerPoint presentations showcasing the advancements in today’s technologies. Using Microsoft Word, they also crafted detailed timelines to explore the history of technology and key inventions in chronological order. And, to top it all off, we’ve been peering into our crystal balls to predict what exciting tech wonders the future holds!
Spanish
This term, the children have been really engaged in our Spanish topic of los Juegos Olímpicos. We’ve connected this engaging theme to history and P.E., exploring the fascinating history of the Olympic Games. The kids have been diving deep into reading and translating sizeable chunks of text, honing their skills by spotting key words. To ensure solid comprehension, they’ve been tackling true or false questions around the content they’ve been studying.
Art
This term, we dived into the fascinating world of sculptures in our art lessons. We started by observing and analysing various types of sculptures, including text sculptures that truly sparked our creativity. After investigating and getting inspired, we rolled up our sleeves and planned our very own sculptures. Using card as our main material, we let our imaginations run wild and brought our sculptures to life!
Music
The BFG’s this half term have been playing the descant recorder. Recapping from their previous skills and knowledge from year 5 recorder work – they recapped Hot Cross Buns. Remembering the finger placing for the notes B A G and following at the formal notation with the backing track. They then began to learn the French folk song Au Clair Du La Lune. They then moved on the learning notes D and C.
Using Charanga whilst playing we took note and tried to put in the dynamics – ff, pp, mp, etc.
