Understanding the world.
We have had caterpillars in class this half term. We have watched them grow from tiny dots to big hairy caterpillars, then into a cocoon. We hope to soon have beautiful butterflies.
Expressive arts
We have been exploring paint to create bunting for the Queen’s Jubilee and art work in the style of Lowry. We have also used charcoal to create pictures in the style of Lowry.
We have created crowns linked to our learning about the Queens Hat.
We have been inspired by the Queen’s palaces and castles to build inside and outside and act out being Royalty.
We have also explored printing to create caterpillars and butterflies in response to the caterpillars we are caring for in class.
We have loved having Kiera the dance coach in to teach us new dances.
Past and present
We have been finding out about the Queen, ready for the Platinum Jubilee. We have finding out about what we already know about the Queen, her palaces and what her jobs are. We have been talking about what her family looks like in comparison to ours and talking about our families as well.
We have been also been watching and making judgements on photographs from the past about the Queen and key moments in her life. We have looked at pictures of our Queen as a baby, a young princess, her coronation (and what that means and why it happened) and then what our queen looks like now. It has been so interesting to find out all about our country and queen.
Phonics
We continue to have daily phonics learning to read and write phase 3 sounds.
Maths
We have continued to explore numbers to 10. Number order, more and less and odds and evens. We have also begun looking at numbers beyond 10 and seeing how the pattern continues.
English
We have been reading the Queen’s Hat. We had a phone call from the Queen saying she had lost her hat in the wind when visiting Townley Hall. We went outside to look for it. We found lots of hats but not the Queens.
We have focused on developing our vocabulary to describe the position of the hats we found and the actual hats. We listened to poems and tried to identify the matching hats.
Physical development
We have continued to practice and refine our 5 key fundamental movement skills:
– Running
– Throwing & Catching
– Jumping
– Hopping and
– Skipping
We also practice our gymnastics daily aswell by moving along the bench and climbing up to a height then jumping off the horse.
RE
In the RE, we have been listening and learning about different stories from different cultures and religions.
We first looked at ‘The Boy that Cried Wolf, then Sikh story of ‘The Crocodile & the Priest’, the Islamic story of ‘Bilal and the Beautiful Butterfly’, the Asian story of the ‘The Best Friends’ and finally, we finished learning about the parable of ‘The Lost Coin’ from the Bible.
We discussed all these stories and what they teach us, we also discussed about how the holy books (Bible, Torah, Qur’ran etc.) teach us about how to live our lives.
PSED (Jigsaw)
In our Jigsaw lessons, we have been learning about ‘Respect’ and how to respect one another and items as well. We’ve spoken about how people who respect each other have more friends and are usually better people. We have completed some role-play and challenges as well, for example, if we saw a child who looked sad and lonely on the park, what could we do?
We also we lucky enough to have a visit from Gerald the Giraffe and Steven and they taught us all about keeping healthy.
