Gruffalos – Summer 2

English

This half term, we have really pushed for more independent writing. We have continued with reading stories and have also written much more independently daily. The children have really enjoyed their writing and we have seen a massive improvement in writing stamina and content over the last few weeks.

Phonics

In terms of Phonics, the children have been continuing their learning of Phase 3 and now Phase 4 Phonics. The children have then been prompted to use these sounds within their writing.

Maths

In Maths, we have based a lot of our lessons around numerical pattern and the children now have developed a good understand of our number system. The children can tell you whether a number is odd or even. We have concentrated on making sure the children have a good understanding of the composition of numbers up to 10 through games and starters. We then continued their development by looking at more Year 1 type place-value questions, getting them ready just before transition.

Theme & JIGSAW

Our Theme this half-term has all been gearing up to transition and getting them ready for Year 1. We visited the Year 1 classroom a few times and spoke a lot why we need to move, how this could make us feel as well as what we have to look forward to. A number of children have struggled and have been quite anxious. The staff have helped the children work through these anxieties, making use of  PSHCE and 1:1 work.

RE

In our RE, we have completed learning on our topic of ‘Special Places’. We learnt about important places of worship such as Synagogues, Churches, Temples, Gurdwaras but mainly focused on the Mosque. We visited the local mosque in Burnley and were able to ask the Imam lots of questions. The children also got the chance to see the prayer hall and watch the traditional wash (wudu) in action. It was a brilliant experience!

PE

We completed our final half-term of EYFS with our Fundamental Movement Skills. We continued to practice and refine our 5 main skills (running, skipping, jumping, hopping, and throwing & catching).

Science

In Science, we have had our butterflies! Over the half-term holidays, they had turned from caterpillars to beautiful butterflies. We released them into the wild from our EYFS yard. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Music

In our Music we were learning about timings and exploring different instruments. The children enjoyed learning about the sounds of certain instruments. In addition to this that they worked on learning how to follow patterns of a song/tune.
