Hobbits Spring 1

English

In English, we have been been studying the first part of the novel, ‘Charlotte’s web’. We made inferenced predictions about what the book might be about from the pictures before reading. We then compared how Fern is different to her dad, which gave us some insight into Fern before getting into role and writing a diary. When Wilbur is taken away to a farm, we used our senses to write a description of the barn. We also then wrote a character description when we came across Charlotte the spider.

Maths

In maths, we used a place value grid to multiply numbers by 10/100/1000. We then applied this when learning how to use the grid method to multiply 2 digit by 3 digit numbers. Next we have developed our understanding of division and learnt how to multiply 4 digit by 1 digit numbers using a bus stop method. We have understood what is meant by remainders. After this, we have started to learn about fractions, understanding denominators and numerators and revising comparing and ordering fractions with the same numerator or denominator. We then learnt how to spot and also how to calculate to find equivalent fractions. Next we learnt how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and we have started to understand how we can use common multiples to compare fractions with different denominators.

Geography

In geography, we have looked at the Silk road which was the most important trading route back in 900AD for trading between China and Europe. We inferred from images what this road would have been used for and how people would have travelled in those times. We used google maps in order to find and identify the different countries that are situated along the Silk road today. Finally we looked at the explorer Marco Polo who was one of the first explorers to confirm the existence of different religions and culture from the east. We deduced what one of the creatures he saw on his travels would have been, and looked at what the Marco Polo cargo ship is used for today.

History

In history, we have started to look at Baghdad in the year 900AD, when Baghdad was the largest city in the Islamic empire and the first city to reach 1million residents. We deduced from a description what Baghdad would have looked like when the city was first built. We used further information to deduce why Baghdad was known as the centre and the crossroads of the universe back at that time and we were able to write this as an explanation text.

Art

In art, we have explored architecture. We scrutinised a photo of a house in order to see the fine detail and sketched the house thinking about proportions. We then studied Zaha Hadid’s architecture and designed our own public buildings based on the work of Zaha Hadid.

RE

In RE, we have continued our learning about Hinduism. We looked at what is the essence of ourselves, and then learnt that Hindus believe that Brahman is the essence of everything and everyone. We learnt about the trimurti and their roles, and about different Gods and deities that Hindus worship.

Science

In science, we have continued to learn about properties of materials. We planned an investigation to see whether changing a variable might affect the saturation point, and evaluated our results. We looked at different materials that when heated, the change of state is reversible, and considered and experimented to see what materials when heated are irreversible. We classified materials as magnetic and non-magnetic and learnt that not all metals are magnetic! We also looked at different definitions for classifying different materials based on their properties and looked at what an alloy is.

PSHCE

In PSHE, we have been looking at keeping ourselves safe. We looked at different scenarios in order to define bullying and decide collectively in which scenarios bullying was taking place. We also looked at different scenarios involving peer pressure and discussed what we could and should do in different situations. Lastly, we looked at what is classed as a drug. We focussed in on the effects of smoking and vaping on our bodies and health.

PE

In PE, the children have revisited the Highwayman narrative poem in order to create a dance performance that fits with the poem. In gymnastics, we have been practising different types of balances in partners and small groups, improving our core each week, and putting these together to create a gymnastics routine.

Music

The children have experimented with a wider range of dynamics, Fortissimo, mezzo forte, mezzo piano and pianissimo. Their created a 4 beat phrase adding in their chosen dynamic. Repeating the composed phrase their changed the dynamics.
