In English, year 5 have been studying the story Twitch. They analysed the map and front cover to anticipate the storyline. Additionally, they honed their persuasive writing skills by crafting a balanced argument on the controversial topic of whether pigeons should be deemed as vermin. Furthermore, they explored various sentence structures and mastered the usage of commas for clarity and impactful sentence alteration.
Maths
Over the past weeks, year 5 have been engaged in exploring various mathematical concepts, including the calculation of perimeter and area of rectangles and composite shapes. In addition, they have been solving word problems, enhancing their understanding of different units of measurement in terms of size and weight, and practising the conversion between these units. This well-rounded approach aims to develop their analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and mathematical fluency.
Science
Year 5 have been engaged in exploring humans and other animals, and life cycles. We looked at the seven signs of life and understood the distinctions between them. They have delved into the intriguing life cycle stages of humans, describing and comparing the transformations that occur during puberty for both boys and girls. Furthermore, the students have immersed themselves in classifying different animals, drawing comparisons between their unique characteristics. Additionally, they have analysed and compared the life cycles of various animals, identifying similarities and differences.
PSHE
The students have delved into the concepts of growth and change, examining personal perceptions, media influences on body image, and representations. Additionally, they have begun exploring the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty.
History
Year 5 have continued to learn about the Trojan Horse by studying more sources and learning more about the Ancient Greeks. They have then come to their own conclusions based on all the evidence as to whether they believe this to be a story, myth or legend. They also took part in a workshop all about Ancient Greece.
RE
The Year 5 children have been delving into the concept of commitment in their Religious Education lessons, with a particular focus on illustrating commitment to God. Through thought-provoking discussions and activities, the pupils explored the meaning of ‘commitment’ and how it manifests in their daily lives on a personal level. Furthermore, they reflected on the ways in which Christians exhibit their commitment to God through dedicated religious practices, along with the underlying motivations driving these actions.
Spanish
The Year 5 children have been actively engaging with the Spanish language curriculum this term. They have continued their exploration of the language through the classic tale of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, immersing themselves in the narrative in Spanish. By doing so, they have not only enhanced their language skills but have also developed a deeper cultural understanding. Additionally, the students have learnt key vocabulary essential for retelling the story independently, showcasing their linguistic progression and proficiency
Music
This half term the children have been composing music online using the music notepad in Charanga. We began by creating some class compositions whilst we learn how to use the technology then composed our own short pieces. We have continued to create online music using the chrome music lab and Incredibox. Furthermore, year 5 participated in a Lancashire singing project, where they sang as part of a large choir at Burnley football club fanzone.
Computing
The children have used EBook Creator to design their own interactive quiz. They chose a topic and thought of questions to then add in multiple choice answers. They then designed different answers pages for correct and incorrect answers.
