English
This term we read the book ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. The book follows a man as he tries to cut down a kapok tree in the rainforest and how the animals try to persuade him not to. We thought about how we could describe the rainforest and made a list of powerful descriptive phrases. We also created a playscript to argue for and against cutting down trees in the rainforest. Finally, we wrote a fact file on an animal found in the Amazon rainforest.
Maths
This term in maths we have been looking at using formal methods to multiply and divide large numbers. We learnt how to partition a number to multiply it more easily and how some dividing questions create a remainder.
RE
In RE we looked at the question ‘Could the Buddha’s teaching make the world a better place. We talked about what is good and bad in the world and why people sometimes suffer. We then looked at the Buddha’s teachings on how to be a good person and discussed how a Buddhist may live their lives as a result. We also thought about how we can make the world a better place ourselves.
PE & Swimming
For PE we have been looking at different elements of gymnastics. We have practiced different ways of traveling, balances, jumps and rolls and thought about how to put these into a gymnastic sequence. We have also been practicing our swimming skills and having a lot of fun in the water.
Computing
In computing we have learnt how to use and make spreadsheets. We looked at the different things spreadsheets can do and what purposes they can have in people’s everyday lives.
History
This term we have been looking at the Anglo-Saxons. We researched where they people came from after the Roman’s left, how they lived and what happened when they converted to Christianity. We also researched to dig at Sutton Hoo and what the artefacts found there can tell us about the Anglo-Saxons.
Science
For science we have been learning about the human digestive system and the different jobs our teeth do. We learnt all the different parts of our digestive system and what jobs they do. We then took at close look at our teeth and how each tooth does a different job to break our food down into smaller pieces. To understand how we can look after our teeth we conducted an experiment with eggs in different liquids to see what effect they had on the shells and how these liquids could affect our tooth enamel. We then moved on to looking at food chains and classifying organisms as producer, predator and prey.
PSHE
This term we have been focusing on our dreams and goals. We identified a goal we have for the future and what we need to do to achieve it. We also talked about how it can feel when we don’t achieve our goals or our dream fall through and what we can do about this.
Art
For our art we have been learning how to mix different tints and shades. We then used this skill and other techniques to create 3D paintings and evaluated our work.
Music
This half terms The Hogwarts have been hard at work with our rehearsals for the upcoming Mass Children’s Choir organised by Let’s Go Sing and their Musical Director Mrs Gill Fourie.
We have had the pleasure to be taught by professional music teachers who come into school and go through the songs, lyrics and actions with us.
The songs are on Google Classroom for the children to have a practice at home. A letter will be sent home with all the details of our exciting event. We perform at King George’s Hall in Blackburn along with another 16 schools. These performances are over two weeks during March 2023
Our group song is Go the distance.
We celebrated Chinese New Year 2023 is the year of the rabbit. The children listened to Chinese Music and had great fun using dance ribbons creating shapes and making them dance to Chinese music.
