Phonics
In phonics, we have been concentrating on consolidating our Phase 5 sounds and introducing new Phase 5 sounds. These sounds are ‘are, tch, oe, ph’ Our focus has been on blending, which has proven beneficial for our daily reading practice. Additionally, we have been diligently practising our precursive handwriting and phonetically sounding out words to enhance our writing skills across all learning areas.
English
In Year 1, this half term has been an exciting journey through the pages This semester in English class, we enhanced our understanding of grammar, focusing on verbs to improve our writing. We studied Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are,” analysing themes of friendship and kindness. We used our imagination to think about what it would be like if our houses transformed into jungles. We practised various writing forms, including persuasive essays and creative stories, and improved our public speaking through discussions and presentations. Overall, we gained a deeper comprehension of English and the ability to express ourselves more confidently.
Maths
This half term, our Math lessons in Little Marvels have been marked by diligent efforts in ordering numbers, mastering addition and subtraction within the range of 10. Precision in forming numbers has been a key focus throughout. In our arithmetic sessions, we’ve embraced hands-on learning with concrete and pictorial manipulatives to tackle subtraction stories. Exploring the positioning of numbers and understanding ordinal numbers has also a significant part of our journey. Through practical applications and focused practice, we’re building a solid foundation in mathematical concepts and skills.
Science
In our science lessons we delved into the fascinating study of the life cycle of plants. We focused on key stages, starting with how seeds germinate into seedlings, and then grow into mature plants. We explored the intricate pollination process, examining how it is crucial for plant reproduction and the continuation of plant species. Through detailed lessons and hands-on activities, we gained a thorough understanding of these processes and their significance within our ecosystem. This comprehensive study has deepened our appreciation for the complexity and importance of plant life.
History and Geography
This term, our class embarked on a fascinating exploration of various subjects. We delved into the tropical climate and stunning geography of St. Lucia, one of the beautiful Caribbean islands. Through this study, we learned about the island’s warm temperatures, lush landscapes, and vibrant rainforests, gaining an appreciation for its natural beauty and ecological significance. Additionally, we examined the historical account of Cher Ami, a remarkable pigeon from World War I, who heroically delivered crucial messages and saved the lives of many soldiers despite being injured. This combination of geographical and historical studies enriched our understanding of the world, highlighting both the wonders of tropical environments and the inspiring stories of bravery from the past.
PE
This term we have been working on our running, jumping, balance and ball rolling skills in athletics and using them in lots of different games. We have also been using the story of the Three Little Pigs to create some dance moves and travels by taking on the rolls of different characters.
RE and PSHCE
In our Little Marvels sessions, we delved into the significance of the Sabbath in Judaism, recognising it as a designated day for rest and spiritual rejuvenation. We explored its roots in the biblical narrative of creation, where it symbolises God’s rest after six days of work. We also drew parallels between the Sabbath in Judaism and Sunday observances in Christianity, highlighting their shared emphasis on worship and reflection. Additionally, we examined the role of synagogues as central hubs for Jewish communities to come together, pray, and engage in communal activities during the Sabbath.
During our PSHE lessons we laid the foundation for understanding the importance of being our best selves. Through various activities and lessons, we learned about the value of kindness, honesty, and perseverance. Whether it was sharing with classmates, being truthful in our actions, or persisting through challenges, we began to grasp the significance of personal growth and character development.
Music
The Little Marvels this half term in their music lessons have been using the classroom glockenspiels. They have learned to open the case, find note B, hold the beater, and bounce it on notes B, A, G, to create a lovely pitch sound.
Using Charanga they played note B along to the music, waiting and listening to the count in and introduction. We count 1,2,3,4 to try and stay in time with each other.
