Autumn 1

We are the Gruffalos class and we have made our own Gruffalos and homes for the Gruffalos friends.

We have been learning lots of core skills including cutting, making our own playdough and using tools, fundamental movement skills, fine motor skills and pencil control including writing our names.

Outside we have made and played with our own kites.  We have been very interested in finding animals, bird spotting and finding out which trees are in our garden area. Inspired by the story of Noah’s Ark we looked carefully at model animals to produce excellent observational drawings and outside we made an ark for us all to travel in.

In our maths learning we have been exploring 2d shapes – circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. We have been learning to count and compare amounts, exploring numbers to 4 inside and outside through lots of fun activities.

We think Goldilocks came to visit us, there were lots of clues. We learnt the story and songs about Goldilocks and the three bears. We drew pictures of them, made bear faces with different objects, acted out the story and made furniture for them.

We have been learning all about technology with Mrs Abbas. Here we are learning how to find stories on the i pad and taking turns to play a phonics game on the screen.

In response to the story of the 3 little pigs we made houses and developed our understanding of different parts of a house.

We have become good listeners and started to learn the sounds letters make and are beginning to blend to read and segment to word build.

Autumn 2

This half term Gruffalo’s started by celebrating Bonfire Night we made chocolate sparklers. “The chocolate melted like a muddy river!” We explored paint and transient art resources to make firework art. We also created pictures using a computer programme “2 paint a picture” here we had to change brush sizes and colours on the screen.

In our maths learning we have focused on numbers to 5. We have been finding out ways to make 5 using the part-part-whole model and ordering numbers.

We have focused a lot on Shape, space and measure in our maths learning, securing 2D shape through fun games. Through the core text of “Dear zoo” we have explored length, height and weight. We have also learnt about pattern decorating trees for Christmas and creating our own patterned wrapping paper and party hats.

We are starting to find reasons for writing and writing in our independent learning more and more making signs, list, notes and writing cards. We continue to love phonics and reading, writing and reading c-v-c words.

Gruffalos have started to take part in some yoga and relaxation exercises. They help us to build our body strength and help us to relax and focus our minds ready to learn.

We have been looking at and finding out about different animals the zoo has sent us. We have begun to look at similarities and differences to help us group and categorise animals.

We are getting ready for Christmas meeting visiting reindeer and working hard practicing for our Nativity we hope you enjoy it.

Spring 1

What a fabulous half term we have had in Gruffalos.

In maths we have continued to focus on numbers to 8 we are thinking of different ways to make 8 and are beginning to record our findings in different ways.

We have also looked at halving amounts, shapes and food. We used these skills in a real life situation to half our food between us and our toys at the teddy bears picnic.

We had a lovely time at our picnic celebrating the return of Mr Bear, who had gone missing. We made him lots of food and drink exploring materials and using tools carefully and with control.

We have been learning the story “we’re going on a bear hunt” and creating our own versions. We have explored different settings. We’ve made mud, explored snow and ice and made snowmen using different materials. We threaded leaves from the wood. We have created colour mixed shades of blue for the river and used problem solving and team work to create our own rivers outside. We made caves and explored using torches to light them up and make shadows.

In technology we have also learnt how to programme beebots and enjoyed creating our own pictures on the lap tops in provision.

We have been challenging ourselves physically to learn new skills of riding a balance bike, balancing and jumping off equipment and learning to throw and catch. This has linked to our PSED learning of perseverance and going for goals.

We have been thinking about our families and people we love and caring for each others. We have found out that Chrisitans like to do this in our RE. We have learnt how to care for our pets with a visit from the vets.

We are starting to write more and more. We are getting our finger muscles stronger using screws in provision. We can make words with magnetic letters and are writing for a variety of different opportunities with our teachers or by ourselves in the role play.

We are looking forward to much more fun learning in the next half term.
