School starts everyday with No – Nonsense Spelling, Guided Reading and then English. After playtime we have a daily maths lesson. In the afternoon we have topic. At the moment we are learning about The Stuarts. (Please see our Topic Map to find out what we are learning) We also do Music, Computing, Science, PE, R.E, PSHCE and Big Maths.
Our P.E. days are Mondays and Wednesdays. All PE kit should be kept in school. Please note all earrings need to be removed or covered with a plaster. On Tuesday afternoon we go swimming so we must ensure we have our full kit in school.
Homework is handed out on Thursdays and has to be completed and brought back into school by the following Tuesday. It includes some timestable practise, some sentence work and talking homework.
We bring home a home reader every day. It is important to read at home as well as school. We learn lots of new things when reading on our own, with a teacher or in small groups.
Autumn Term 2 2016
We have worked on a variety of areas in Mathematics this half term. We spent some time reminding ourselves of how to divide using the bus stop method and then applied this knowledge to real life problems. Next, we revised how to multiply using the grid method and then applied this knowledge to real life problems and reasoning questions. In addition to this, we worked out the area of rectangles and compound shapes. We then spent time revising our knowledge of fractions including comparing and ordering fractions and finding equivalent fractions.
In English this half term, we have been learning about Information Texts. We spent some time reading a variety of information texts and identified their features. We also looked at the language and punctuation used. In addition to this, we researched the famous English broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough. Once we had found information about him, we used our knowledge of information texts to create our own information booklet about the life of Sir David Attenborough.
During this half term, we continued with our topic about The Stuarts. We visited Gawthorpe Hall and learned about its history during the Stuart period.
Back in class, we learned about the Roundheads and the Cavaliers and the parts they played in the Civil War. We also re-enacted the court scene of when King Charles I was executed by Parliament. In addition to this, we researched Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II and found out how they were completely different leaders. To finish our topic, we learned about The Great Fire of London. We created some work in Art linked to this.
Our Science topic linked to our English topic as we looked at David Attenborough’s work. We then researched an animal and wrote our own information page about it.
In P.E. this half term we have been learning how to play hockey. We spent some time learning how to correctly hold the hockey stick and pass the ball with accuracy. Over the weeks, we have further developed our skills and have progressed onto playing games. Also this half term, we completed our swimming lessons. Some of us managed to achieve our 800 metre certificate. We had to swim thirty two lengths! In addition to this, we have had a visitor called Jane from Up and Active. She has taught us about healthy eating and has really made us think about our diet and lifestyle.
This half term in R.E. we have been learning to evaluate different accounts of the Christmas story and understand that stories can be true in different ways. We have looked at a variety of texts and shared our thoughts and opinions through discussions.
Spring Term 2
In English this half term, we have been learning about magazine articles. We have been identifying features of them, research our own information then to later create our own. Our magazine articles were based around either Topic or our learning in Science.
In Maths this half term, we have been learning about 2D and 3D shape and their properties. We have also learnt about angles of different triangles (Isosceles, Scalene and Equilateral). Additionally, we have been learning about Time and Fractions.
In Topic this half term, we have been learning about Spain; researching its geographical features and also its history. Additional to this we have been learning about the United Kingdom, points of a compass, reading OS maps and learning about our local community.
In Science this half term, we have been learning about Space. Discussing planets, their purpose, life on other planets … is it possible? We’ve also learnt about stars and key vocabulary such as Orbit and Satellite.
In PE this half term, we have been learning about netball with Mr Brown. We have focused our skills on learning to pass and look for space. As part of our links to PSHCE, we have been looking at winning and losing and how to deal with it respectability.
Summer Term 2017
In Year 5 this year we have been learning about lots of different genres of writing from Poetry to Information Booklets and Magazines to Reports. We have tried working across the subjects so our information booklets are based around our Egypt topic and Magazine articles were based around Spain, which was our topic around Easter.
In Maths, we have been learning about all aspects from Shape to Calculations to time. We have engaged in practical lessons on numerous occasions to really build on the children’s conceptual understanding.
Science has been exciting based around a various concepts like Earth & Space, Forces, Magnetism and also living things.
In addition to the aforementioned learning, we have been learning how to sketch properly, learn about the different world religions with Ms Brown, how to take part effectively in team games and other sports with Mr Brown and also learn the basics of the French language.
