Little Marvels have had a busy start to the academic year! We have been learning our school rules, routines and responsibilities. This year, Little Marvels have also adopted WWF polar bear and have pledged to help protect polar bears!

In Little Marvels, we have been looking at different fiction stories. We have focussed on Oliver Jeffers ‘Lost and Found’. It is all about a penguin, who came to visit a little boy and their adventures. We are learning to apply our phonic knowledge in to our reading and writing.

In Maths, we have been learning about ‘Place Value’ and the different equipment that we can use to help us with our learning. Little Marvels, have been practising counting numbers up to 30 forwards and backwards! We are continuing to practise writing our number formations correctly.

In Science, Little Marvels are learning about ‘Seasons’. They have been discussing the four seasons and the key differences between each season. We have had lots of fun collecting leaves and making leave pictures.

In our art work, we have been celebrating our similarities and differences. Little Marvels, know that we are all unique and special in our own ways.

In PE we have been working on our ball skills. We have been practicing throwing and catching and playing lots of games that use these skills.

Our Music lessons have been really fun! We have been composing our own music and using the glockenspiels.

In Computing we have been looking at the uses of information technology beyond school. We have also been using Purple Mash to improve our coding skills.

Autumn 2

Little Marvels have had a busy half term. We have been working hard and at the same time having lots of fun!

In our English work, we have been learning about the different traditional tales and Little Red Riding Hood. We made a story map of Little Red Riding Hood so we could orally tell the story with picture prompts. Along with this, we have looked at the different features of a traditional tale, written our own character profiles, hot seated the different characters and even learnt how to change the ending of a story.

In our grammar lessons, our focus has been to think about writing our own sentence with a capital letter, finger space and a full stop.

This term, we have been building up our knowledge of place value and applying it in addition number sentences. We have been making or own word problems and solving them. Little Marvels are beginning to develop their explanation and reasoning skills to solve simple word problems.

In our history lessons, we have been learning about the different explores and what they have done. We have been discussing the skills and characteristics different explorers would need to be a great explorer. Following on from this, we looked at how those qualities (resilience, courage, motivation) could help us in our everyday life.

In our geography lessons, we have been trying to find out why penguins don’t fly. We have been looking at ‘Pip’ stories to help us recognise the features of a penguin and their habitat. We have also been looking at the North and South Pole and the different animals that live there Did you know that Antarctica is a desert as it hardly rains or snows there?

In our Science lessons, Little Marvels have continued to learn about the seasons. We have been learning the key differences between the seasons and language linked to the seasons.

During our Art week, we have been looking at drawing lines using different media. We have had an exciting week observing leaves and drawing them using pencils and charcoals. We have been thinking about shading and the different tones we can create.  Using rubbers, we experimented on making our charcoal background darker or lighter.

We have made moving picture using traditional Tales as our background. As well as this, we have made reindeer photo frames to sell at our Christmas Fayre. We had to think about our design and what we would use to join the sides together. For our Christmas Fayre, we also made edible snowmen! We had lots of fun making all the different creative things.

During our Computing lessons we have learnt how to log on and off sensibly. We are much more confident using our mouse to draw images. We used ‘2Paint’ software to draw our setting backgrounds for our moving pictures. Along with tis we have been learning how to log onto Purple Mash and use the tools effectively.

In our PE lessons we have been learning to throw, catch and hit using racquets, balls and beanbags. As well as this we have been learning how to work together cooperatively in partners and small groups.

Spring 1

In Maths we have been counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We have been looking at rules and patterns. We have also been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. Little Marvels, have been learning the names of 2D/3D shapes and some of their properties.

Little Marvels have been learning about fiction and non-fiction books. We have been learning about information text. We have read lots of information text and written our own information text about seasons and penguins. During our grammar lessons, we have been learning the difference between nouns, verbs and adjectives.

Story Telling Week:

Little Marvels enjoyed making their own stories up using different props. We all had a box filled with interesting treasures. First, we explored all the items in the box and discussed how and where we may use them. Then we thought about how we can include them into our story, we discussed characters and setting. Finally, we created our own stories and told each other

Art Week

During art week, Little Marvels learnt about different ways to print. We looked at lots of different styles of printing. Then we had a try at printing with different vegetables like onions, potatoes, peppers, cauliflower and even broccoli! We had lots of fun and our final product is on display in our school corridor.

In History, we are studying Christopher Columbus and why he is a significant figure in our history. We have looked at his adventures and thought about how difficult it would have been for him to be working at such a young age.

This half term, we are looking at ‘Animals including Humans’. In this topic we will be looking at animals and their features as well as where they live and what they eat.

In Science, we have also been doing interesting to build our curiosity. This has helped us to develop our questioning skills and predictions.

In PE, Little Marvels have been learning about travelling using different parts of their body. Also, we have been learning to develop our balancing skills, it has been lots of fun!

In our computing we are beginning to learn how to use instructions effectively to program our games. Little Marvels decided to develop their coding skills by working in partners and giving each other instructions to make a jam sandwich. We learnt the clearer the instructions the better the sandwich.

In PSHCE we are learning to understand our emotions and what each emotion looks like. We are developing our vocabulary to help us to really understand the different types of emotions there are and how each emotion makes our stomachs feel.
