PSHCE at Springfield CPS

Vision

At Springfield Community Primary School, we strive to cultivate an environment where pupils not only acquire academic knowledge but also develop essential life skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Our PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) syllabus is designed to equip children with the foundational skills they need to thrive in a complex, evolving society. The core components of our programme encompass safety, empathy, achievement, resilience, friendship, and an understanding of social, moral, spiritual, and cultural development, all while instilling a respect for British Values.

This vision reflects our commitment to ensuring that every pupil earns a comprehensive education that transcends traditional academic subjects. We believe that education must nurture the whole child, fostering not only intellectual growth but also emotional and social capabilities. By doing so, we prepare our children for the challenges they will face in their personal and professional lives, enabling them to become responsible and informed citizens.

We regard the principles embedded in PSHCE as integral to the overall educational experience. Our approach aims to cultivate an atmosphere of support, empathy, and respect, allowing children to express themselves and explore complex social issues in a safe and guided manner. Our vision includes promoting an understanding of the importance of safeguarding and mental health, necessary for students to navigate life’s challenges effectively.

We are dedicated to creating a learning environment that instils confidence, develops resilience, and encourages respectful interactions amongst peers. Thus, our educational ethos promotes the understanding that all individuals have rights and responsibilities within the community, enhancing pupils’ overall personal growth and societal contributions.

We fully embrace the integration of British Values within our PSHCE framework. By highlighting values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and the tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, we cultivate an atmosphere that respects diversity and fosters understanding amongst all members of our school community.

Intent

The intent of our PSHCE curriculum at Springfield is to ensure that every pupil is equipped with the skills, strategies, knowledge, and understanding necessary to lead a healthy, resilient, and responsible life. We strive to develop the whole child, which encompasses not only academic progress but also the growth of astute emotional awareness and social understanding.

Central to this intent is the recognition that children must learn to navigate their feelings, establish respectful relationships, and comprehend their roles as members of society. Our aim is to foster an understanding of their social and moral responsibilities, allowing pupils to develop a strong sense of identity and self-worth.

In addition to interpersonal and emotional development, we ensure that our curriculum encompasses essential safeguarding education. Pupils learn critical knowledge regarding whom they can turn to for help and support, reinforcing the notion that asking for assistance is not only acceptable but encouraged within our school community. We believe that by providing this information, students become more adept at recognising potential dangers and empowered to make informed decisions that affect their well-being.

Implementation

To effectively realise our intent, we implement a well-structured PSHCE programme at Springfield Community Primary School, utilising the SCARF framework. SCARF is a comprehensive scheme of work that integrates PSHCE and wellbeing education, including Relationships Education and Health Education, alongside non-statutory Sex Education.

Our adoption of SCARF ensures that we offer a cohesive curriculum that aligns with the recommended learning opportunities set by the PSHCE Association’s Programme of Study. More importantly, we are committed to adapting the provided framework to suit the unique characteristics of our local community. This flexibility allows us to draw upon our surroundings, tailoring our lessons to reflect, for instance, local events or themes that resonate with our pupils’ experiences.

Our subject lead collaborates closely with teaching staff across all year groups and with phase leads in EYFS, KS1, and KS2. This collaborative approach ensures that teachers possess the requisite knowledge, skills, and resources to deliver PSHCE education with confidence. To facilitate professional development, we provide access to various teaching support resources, including guidance documents and training materials. Teachers are encouraged to reach out to the PSHCE subject lead for further assistance, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

The curriculum is divided into six half-termly units that cover a comprehensive range of pertinent topics. These units intertwine core learning objectives with practical classroom activities, allowing pupils to engage with the content meaningfully.  Class discussions frequently centre around the unit themes, offering pupils opportunities to articulate their thoughts and feelings regarding each topic. The six half-termly units are:

  1. Me and My Relationships: This unit encourages pupils to explore feelings, emotions, conflict resolution, and friendship dynamics.
  2. Valuing Difference: Emphasising respectful relationships, this unit enhances pupils’ understanding of diversity, equality, and British values.
  3. Keeping Myself Safe: In this unit, pupils learn about personal safety, health, and well-being.
  4. Rights and Responsibilities: This unit educates pupils about the significance of financial literacy, environmental stewardship, and civic engagement.
  5. Being My Best: Focusing on health, resilience, goal-setting, and self-improvement, this unit inspires pupils to strive for personal excellence.
  6. Growing and Changing: This unit addresses the human lifecycle, bodily changes, and essential safety considerations.

Impact

The impact of our PSHCE programme is evident as pupils acquire the vital skills necessary to navigate life confidently, promoting their social and emotional well-being. Students develop the ability to maintain positive relationships with peers and adults alike, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

Assessment of the impact of our PSHCE curriculum is multi-faceted. We observe pupils demonstrating increased emotional literacy, confidently articulate their feelings, and manage their relationships effectively. Furthermore, pupils exhibit a profound sense of belonging within the Springfield community, perceiving themselves as valued contributors to our school. This sense of belonging enhances their overall well-being and positively influences their engagement in learning.
