Welcome to Year 2
Our Teacher is Mrs Collins.
Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Barnes, Miss Wilkinson, Miss Latham and Mr Whittaker
In Year 2 we have fun learning everyday. Please see our long term plan for topic covered over the year.
School starts everyday with Phonics and then English. After playtime we have a daily maths lesson. In the afternoon we have topic. At the moment we are learning about Great Explorers and The Great Fire of London. We also do Music, Computing, PE and R.E.
We bring home a home reader everyday. It is important to read at home as well as school. We learn lots of new things when reading on our own, with a teacher or in small groups.
PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. All PE kit should be kept in school. Please note all earrings need to be removed or covered with a plaster.
Home work is sent home on a Thursday and needs to be completed by Tuesday on the following week. It includes some timestable practise, some sentence work and talking homework.
Spring Term 2016
In English our genre was narrative so we looked at traditional tales, writing an alternative version to the story Little Red Riding Hood.
In Maths we have further developed our understanding of multiplication and division and used scales to weigh ingredients to make salt dough. We then used the dough to make 3D shapes in our Maths lesson.
In Science our topic has involved looking at animals including Humans. We focused mainly on Humans and found out about changes in our bodies as we grow. We investigated healthy eating and how we can look after our bodies. We are looking forward to visiting Blackpool Zoo.
In History we have been learning about a significant event and person- the Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys. As part of our learning we found out about the events of the Great Fire; reasons why it happened and the consequences the fire had on London. We also looked at development of the Fire Service and house building since the Fire. We made bread and wrote the instructions in our English lesson. We used the skills we had learnt in art how to mix water colours to make fiery backgrounds for our paintings.
In RE our focus was Judaism. We talked about the Sedar plate and the meanings behind the different foods.
In Computing we looked at lots of different programs and talked how they worked and about how they could be improved.
World Book Day
Thursday 3rd March 2016
We read the story of Funnybones and discussed the characters and the setting. Following on from this we spilt into 3 groups. One group used puppets to retell the story, another group wrote a book review about the story and the final group made split pin skeletons and learnt the bones of the body.
Summer Term 2016
In English we have been looking at animal stories.
We read Omnibomulator by Dick King Smith and then wrote our own version of the story.
We have been looking a poetry and writing poems about minibeasts.
We have rounded numbers, used the four rules of number to solve problems, read scales and graphs as well as looking at shapes. We investigated how much juice we liked in our squash. We used a measuring cylinder to carefully measure the right amount of juice and water.
We went to Towneley woods to investigate the habitats of different minibeasts and even went worm charming! We wrote our own minibeast code to show others how to look after habitats and respect minibeasts.
We went on a visit to St Anne’s and look for physical and human features we then compared them to Burnley. We had a lovely day. We walked on the pier, visited the lifeboat station and played on the beach. We even enjoyed an ice-cream!
We are making our own websites about minibeasts using buttons and hyperlinks.
