Maths
At the beginning of the Spring term, Year 6 began to learn about percentage. We spent some time investigating how percentage relates to fractions and decimals to make sure the children had a solid understanding of the concept of percentage. We then focused on finding percentages of amounts.
Once the children were more confident with percentage, we began to look at measure. The children revisited and built upon prior knowledge of finding area and perimeter of 2-D shapes including triangles and parallelograms. Then the class learned how to find the volume of cubes and cuboids by applying their knowledge of multiplication. Throughout these topics the children were given plenty of opportunities to problem solve and reason with their understanding.
English
For English, we focused our English learning around the book “Pax”.
Before reading the novel, the children researched foxes to ensure that the class had an understanding of how foxes behave in the wild and learned key vocabulary which could be used to describe a fox. The children used this information to write their own non-chronological reports including key layout features like sub-headings, colons and bullet points.
While reading the book, the children have been able to show inference of character’s thoughts and actions and have found evidence in the text to support their answers.
The children have really enjoyed the story so far and we will continue to focus our learning around the novel for the rest of the Term.
Science
Our science topic has been Evolution and Inheritance. To begin our topic, we looked at inherited characteristics and discussed which traits are inherited through our genetics and which are acquired or learnt through watching others. We have also looked at how animals inherit characteristics from their parents in order to help them survive in their environments. This then lead on to adaptation as the children found out about how and why animals have changed over generations. To discover why animals adapt over time, we carried out an investigation using binder clips of different sizes to mimic birds’ beaks. The children tested these “beaks” in a timed experiment to see which shape and size of beak would be.
R.E.
In R.E., we focused on the religion of Christianity. The topic covered the idea of eternity and how Christians believe in eternal life and unconditional love. The children expressed their own views on eternal life and we discussed how Christians believe in life after death due to Jesus’s resurrection. We also considered how a Christian wedding focuses on eternal and unconditional love.
History
We continued learning about the Trojan Horse this term. The children gathered all the evidence for and against the authenticity of the story and wrote a balanced argument based on their evidence.
Computing
In computing, the children learned how to use spreadsheets on a computer to organise information. The children were able to tabulate information and even input formulae to find totals and percentages of amounts.
P.E.
For Gymnastics, the children worked in pairs to practise and perform balances, using their core strength to hold the balance. The children were then able to incorporate these balances into a short routine including a balance, a roll, a jump and different methods of travelling. The children enjoyed practicing and performing their routines for their peers. Then as a class, we would evaluate each group’s performance and suggest ways to improve.
