Maths
This term, we started by revisiting the topic of fractions, decimals and percentages. The children looked at the relationship between the three representations and used this information to solve a range of problems around place value and using the four operations.
Next, we turned our attention to algebra. This involved the children applying their four operations to find x and y as unknown amounts. The children enjoyed identifying the patterns in sequences and coming up with their own algebraic formulae.
English
We finished our novel “Pax” this term. The children really enjoyed reading to the book’s climax and were able to evaluate the ending based on their own opinions. In the lead up to the story’s ending, the children were able to identify the themes that the author was trying to get across to the reader through the language used. They were also able to make reasoned predictions of how the story would end.
Throughout the final few chapters, there were plenty of short writing opportunities and opportunities for the children to learn key grammatical terms like formal language or active and passive voice.
Science
Our final science topic is animals including humans. So far, the children have learned about the main components of the circulatory system as well as researching how our diet and exercise routine can impact on our health. We carried out several investigations during this term, including testing how different exercises affect our heart rate which we measured by feeling our pulse. The children have then recorded their results in table, presented them in a line graph and written a conclusion of their findings.
R.E.
In R.E., we focused on the religion of Islam. We discussed how the children would live a good life and compared these with how Muslims try to live their lives. We have also discussed the concept of life after death and how that can motivate people to live better lives.
Computing
In computing, the children have learned about text adventures- a story that you can change the ending of depending on the option you choose. They started off by testing a pre-made text adventure and trying to find as many endings as possible. They then planned and created their own adventures with alternative endings on Purple Mash.
P.E.
The children have worked on skills linked to striking and field games. The children have practised throwing and catching with a smaller ball as well as being able to strike the ball consistently.
Spanish
We have started looking at using adjectives in our speaking and writing this term. The children have an understanding of the order in which adjectives are used in Spanish and can apply them in their own conversations. We have also focused on how adjectives can be written differently depending on the gender of the noun. The children really enjoyed tasting traditional Spanish cuisine to help them best describe the food.
History
We have started to learn about the Battle of Britain in our History lessons. The children have interpreted primary and secondary sources of information relating to the build up of Germany’s attack on Britain. They have then used these sources to gather evidence to recognise the likelihood of an attack on Britain.
We will continue with this topic after Half Term.
R.E.
The BFG’s have looked at what they thought were hash tags! – Oh no they are musical symbols called sharps. We listened to The Pink Panther theme and watched a YouTube clip where we could follow the notation and spotted the sharp symbols.
For some composition ideas we had a play with Blob Opera, Chrome Music lab, Rhythm grids on Charanga and music within Purple Mash. We then composed some 4/4 rhythm grids and selected pitch ready to try and play this on the glockenspiels.
After our SATs week we performed the SATs Rap.
