Year 2 have had a busy start to the year and have done some excellent learning.
One of the highlights was when Burnley Youth Theatre came into school for a Roald Dahl workshop.
We all took part in acting out the story of ‘Fantastic Mr Fox!’. We used our voices and bodies to help us portray the different characters and then we learned a rhyme with actions to help us remember the different characters.
In our English lessons we have started reading The Secret Of Black Rock by Joe Stanton. We have done lots of art work to help our understanding as well as drama such as ‘hot-seating’.
We have been working on addition and subtraction as well as place value in our Maths lessons. The children have been using equipment such as Base 10 and 100 squares to help them with their learning.
We have done some outdoor learning for our Science lessons whilst we explored Living things and their habitats. The children also completed homework on this topic.
In our Art lessons we have been using lots of different mediums such as pastels, charcoal, pencil and paint to portray a variety of trees. We also created fish using collage!
At the end of the half-term for a treat we made our very own chocolate apples, just in time for Halloween!
Our Geography lessons this half-term have been based around where we live. We have examined lots of different photographs from around the world and we have learned about Human and Physical Geography.
In our PE lessons we have focussed on ball skills. We have been improving our throwing, catching and bouncing skills.
In our Computing lessons we have been learning about coding. We have learnt some technical vocabulary including ‘algorithm’ and ‘debug’.
Music
The Fantastic Foxes have been creating an Ostinato.
Mrs Lingard ate such a lot of chocolate just so we could use the wrappers to create some ‘Chocolate Rhythms’! We said the name on the wrapper, tapped or clapped it out then played a few after each other to make a longer rhythm. We followed a simple graphic score using percussion instruments and then repeated it to make an ostinato.
Using the Charanga rhythm grid we created a group rhythm and played different backing genres and changed to tempo to make it tricky. Then we wrote our own rhythm notes down on a rhythm grid.

Key Question: Is it possible to be kind to everyone all of the time?
The highlight of our half term was having a visit from Richard Booth the Minister at Sion Church.
The children welcomed Richard into class and took part in his session. They listened so well and eagerly answered his questions about kindness and told him all about the learning they had done during the past few weeks.
We have learnt the two Bible stories – The Good Samaritan, Luke 10: 25-37 and The Paralysed Man, (Mark 2: 1-12) we read the stories, watched a video and then acted out the stories using stick puppets. We chatted about Why Jesus told these stories? What messages do the stories give us?
We have had lots of class and group discussions about kindness. Asking ourselves is it possible to be kind all of the time? Even when friends are being mean. It can be tricky, how can be act, how can we still be friends.
Finally, the children created a kindness poster and made a paper friendship bracelet.
