Hogwarts – Spring 2

English

This term in English we have looked at two stories. The first was a legend from Cornwall called The Mousehole Cat. We looked a lot at how the author describes the storm that is stopping the town from fishing and wrote our own version of the story from a different character’s point of view as well as a poem. We also looked at the African tale Fly, Eagle, Fly! about a man who finds an eagle chick and raises it to be a chicken. We talked about how we can sometimes be the chickens, unaware of our own potential when really, we are the eagle and need to reach for the sky.

Maths

In maths we have looked at how to draw different types of graphs and how to interpret the data. We talked about how graphs can be compared to each other and what this might tell us. This term we also looked at fractions. We learnt how to add fractions with the same denominator, how to find equivalent fractions, what mixed number and improper fractions are how to find fractions of amounts.

Science

For science we have been learning about the human digestive system and the different jobs our teeth do. We learnt all the different parts of our digestive system and what jobs they do. We then took at close look at our teeth and how each tooth does a different job to break our food down into smaller pieces. To understand how we can look after our teeth we conducted an experiment with eggs in different liquids to see what effect they had on the shells and how these liquids could affect our tooth enamel.

History

This term we have been looking at the Anglo-Saxons. We researched where they people came from after the Roman’s left, how they lived and what happened when they converted to Christianity. We also researched to dig at Sutton Hoo and what the artefacts found there can tell us about the Anglo-Saxons.

DT

In DT we have started to research trains and different materials in preparation for making our own electrical train next term. We have looked at how this train we work including the electrical circuit, switch and pully system.

Computing

During this term we have been looking at how you format documents on a computer. We looked at how to edit and improve a newspaper article before gathering information about a breaking news story to create our own article.

PE

For PE this term we have been looking at dance. We have learnt about how we can travel in a dance and how to perform moves in canon and unison. We have also looked a little at how to time moves to music.

PSHE

This term we have been learning about how to be healthy. We learn about what effects alcohol and smoking can have on the body and how to identify and resist peer pressure.
