Maths

In maths this term we have been looking at developing our understanding of multiplication and division. We have used arrays to help us understand how to multiply larger numbers and then moved onto using the grid method. We also looked at fact families and how multiplication and division are linked.

English

This half term we have immersed ourselves in The Lost Thing and used it as inspiration for a wide range of writing. We have written rich character and setting descriptions, using similes and metaphors to create vivid imagery and to help readers picture the unusual world of the story. We have also written diary entries from the viewpoint of different characters, exploring their emotions and using inference to understand how they might have felt during key moments in the narrative. Building on this, we planned and wrote our own prequels, imagining the events that might have happened before the story began and ensuring our writing matched the tone and style of the original text. Throughout the term, we have strengthened our grammar skills – particularly our use of inverted commas.

Art

This half term we have explored the exciting world of 3D art and developed our confidence in designing and creating sculpture. We began by experimenting with different ways of joining 2D shapes to form sturdy 3D structures, testing a variety of materials to see which combinations worked best. As we practised these skills, we learned how different techniques—such as folding, shaping, cutting, layering, and attaching—could change the strength and appearance of our designs. We spent time developing our own creative ideas, sketching possibilities and adapting them as we discovered what worked well in practice. Throughout the unit, we reflected on our progress by evaluating our work, discussing what we liked, what we would improve, and how our choices affected the outcome.

Science

This term we have been looking at forces. We have been focusing on friction and how it affects the movement of an object across another. We have learnt how to conduct fair experiments and assess how valid our results are. We have also looked at magnetism and what materials are magnetic.

History

For history we have moved on from the Stone Age to the next step of development for the people of Britain, the Bronze Age. We have learnt that the Bell Beaker people brought the knowledge of how to make bronze with them from central Europe which led to better farming and a better quality of life for the people of Britain. We also investigated the burial of the Amesbury Archer and stone circle and how these may show us that Bronze Age people believed in an afterlife and were trading with people in other countries.

Spanish

In Spanish this term we have been leaning how to say and write ten different types of fruit. Next term we will start to look at how to say ‘I like…’ and ‘I don’t like…’ in Spanish and include the names of the fruit.

Computing

Our focus this term has been on online safety. We looked at why we should only talk to people we know online and why talking to strangers can be dangerous even if they seem nice. We also looked at avatars and why these are a good way of keeping our identity private online but how people can also use these to lie about who they are online. Finally, we talked about what cyber bullying is, why someone would do it and how it can affect people.

RE

This term our question in RE has been ‘What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?’. We started by looking at what the qualities of a leader are. We then looked at the disciple Simon Peter and why he chose to follow Jesus. Finally, we looked at Christian Aid and discussed why their belief in Jesus inspires them to help the poorest people around the world.

PSHCE

This term our PSHCE focus was on Keeping Safe. We looked the difference between risk and danger and how we can identify risks and reduce the danger in different situations. We also looked at how to keep ourselves safe online with a particular focus on identifying false information online. Finally, we explored the risks of alcohol and cigarettes.

PE

In PE we have been looking at different superheroes and how they move to inspire our dance moves and create short dance sequence with a group. We have also been working on our cricket skills including our reaction times and hand-eye coordination.

Music

During our music sessions with have looked at two words – compose and improvise. We used Charanga to create simple compositions using a computer. Finally, we used the notes G A B C D on our classroom glockenspiels to improvise over a backing track.
