In Year 2 this half term we have been as busy as ever with Nativity rehearsals, trips and lots of hard work!
In December we had a trip to Gawthorpe Hall for a Victorian Christmas event. While we were there we each made a ‘Cornucopia’ (a traditional Victorian Christmas decoration). Then we played some Victorian Christmas games and sung Christmas carols. Father Christmas was also there and the children got to talk to him and tell him what they would like for Christmas! Finally, we went downstairs to the kitchen and learned all about Christmas puddings including the ingredients that are needed.
In DT, the children have been tasting, designing and making their very own dips. They have used lots of different skills including choosing appropriate tools and evaluating existing products.
Our latest book in English that we have been studying is The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. The children have done some drama work such as ‘hot seating’ and ‘freeze frames’ to help get into character and understand how characters might be feeling. We have also attempted to debate and use persuasive language.
In Maths, the children are currently working on multiplication. They have used practical equipment and drawn arrays so far. Prior to this we were working on addition and subtraction word problems.
In our Science lessons we have been learning about plants. We started by exploring seeds and bulbs by dissecting them. We then went outside to plant them and test the best conditions for successful growth. Throughout this topic we have also explored how some plants can adapt to suit their environment.
We started our History topic by discussing and researching Guy Fawkes as he is a History Maker. We will be moving onto learning about 6 famous female History makers.
We have continued to work on out throwing and catching skills in PE through the use of team games. The children have enjoyed playing ‘Piggy in the Middle’ amongst others.
Our Computing lessons this half term have been about E-Safety. The children have been learning how to email and they know how to report any emails that look like they may not be from a trusted person.
We were very lucky to be visited for a second time by the Minister at the Zion Church. He talked to the children all about Christmas and used crackers to help explain everything to us!
Towards the start of the half term we enjoyed a ‘Yogi Day’. A lady came into school and showed us lots of different Yoga moves which helped to make us feel lovely and relaxed.
At the end of the half term all of the children thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas dinner and parties at school this year!
Year 2, The Fantastic Foxes have been fantastic this half term as usual. They have been hard at work learning the lyrics to the Nativity Carols for this year’s performance.
They sang; Little Donkey, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a manger, We three kings and finishing with We wish you a Merry Christmas. Alana and Charlie were our soloists.
The children sang as an ensemble in St. Catherine’s Church to support the EYFS children who acted out the Christmas Story. The Little Marvels sang at our KS1 Christingle Service lead by Father Roger and Mr. Garrett accompanied on the church organ.
We all enjoyed a Christmas Assembly with a brass band!
Play It Forward, conducted by Mr. David Warren. He taught at Towneley, now called Unity for 25 years as Head of Music. The band members played our Nativity Carols. We raised the school roof with our fabulous singing!
Merry Christmas and Season Greetings from Mrs. Lingard and Mr. Garrett.
