The Incredible Book Eating Boy was a fantastic text that we all thoroughly enjoyed reading. The children found it funny and thought-provoking and we all discussed and wrote about what kind of books we would choose to eat if we could. Some examples were ballerina books so that we would be super dancers or football books so that we could improve our football skills!

After exploring the text in depth, we wrote letters to Henry to try and persuade him to stop eating all the books. Everybody came us with interesting reasons for him to stop eating the books and we decided that ultimately, it wasn’t fair because nobody else could enjoy all the wonderful stories out there.

The Disgusting Sandwich was our final text this half-term. The children loved the story and hearing about all the different ways that the sandwich got more and more revolting. The children used their amazing adjectives to describe all the weird and wonderful ingredients that they would include in their own sandwiches. We then moved onto learning about instructions to create our very own sandwiches.

Maths

In our Maths lessons, we have covered number and place value, addition and subtraction and geometry. The children have had lots of opportunities to use practical equipment such as the tens and ones resources, part-whole templates, counters and ten frames. They have also been shown how to draw these methods to use the pictorial method when they do independent work.

Spelling

We have focussed on the -less and -ful suffixes this half-term, as well as words beginning ‘wr’ and apostrophes for possession.

Shared Reading

Our first text was Animal Poems. It was a wonderful introduction to poetry in Year 2 and we all loved reading the poems about different animals. A highlight was Joey the Bull, who broke a gate with his bottom! After this, we moved onto The Great Escape. This text is about a busy family and some crickets that manage to escape from their cage! The children have used dictionaries to find meanings to words, answered True or False questions and written reviews.

Grammar

This half-term we have focussed on conjunctions, question marks and exclamation marks. The children have enjoyed writing their own question sentences and exclamation sentences. We are continuing to cover and understand nouns, verbs and adjectives and have also introduced adverbs.

Arithmetic

In Arithmetic we have been continuing to work on our 2-, 5- and 10-times tables. We have been consolidating our counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and have continued to recite the whole times table sentences.

P.E.

In PE, Fantastic Foxes have moved onto controlling a ball. They began with a tennis ball, letting the tennis ball drop to bounce and catching it again. Then progressed to a basket/netball and let this drop to bounce and catch it. Next, they used two hands to drop and push the ball to keep it bouncing, when ready taking one hand away!

We then, in pairs, bounced the ball to our partner and then made a four. Finally, we added movement the of our feet. We dribbled and ran then added a change in direction.

Music

This half term The Fantastic Foxes have been hard at work learning to sing nativity songs from memory. The children warmed up their voices and faces before singing. We performed this at St Stephens Church. They sang as a choir to support our foundation class. What a superb performance it was too!

Our focus question was Why do Christians say that Jesus is the ‘Light of the world’?

The children explored the use of light to and how it might be used in religious communities to indicate the presence of God and as a description for Jesus as God incarnate. The children were then explored links between the imagery and symbolism of light in the Christian context and significant events in their own lives. The children were able to recall information about why the birth of Jesus is important to Christians and why Jesus is seen as a gift to the world.

ICT

The activity pack we have studied this half term is Digital Art. This included four projects to develop different digital art skills; lines, shapes, fill, text and pixel art. The children were guided through the projects with video tutorials where they could re watch at their own pace. They used lines and fill tools to make interesting patterns and mimic the Mondrian artist style. They added a variety of shapes and then labelled them with text. Finally we created some beautiful nativity scenes using our new skills.

Geography

This term we have been investigating where our food come from. We looked at the county of Devon and why it is such good land for raising dairy cattle and what the milk is then used for. We also investigated where are sugar comes from and found out that 50% of it is made from sugar beet that is grown in the UK. We then moved on to looking at Costa Rica and why its hot, wet weather is ideal for growing bananas and why we have it import them to the UK instead of growing them ourselves. Finally, we look at what ‘free-range’ and ‘locally produced’ food meant and why many people prefer to buy it.

Science

This half term we have continued to look at animals including humans. We have investigated what carnivores, omnivores and herbivores eat and out them into food chains. We then looked at what can happen to our bodies if we eat too much or not enough food. We have also looked at the importance of exercise and how it can affect our bodies.
