Gruffalos – Autumn 1

First of all, Welcome to Springfield to all our new children and parents. What a start to the year it has been … The new Gruffalo class have come in a settled in brilliantly to the Springfield way.

In the first two weeks of September, the children were part-time and were completing their learning around the book, ‘The Colour Monster’. This book told the children about the different emotions that you can feel and the tell-tale signs of these emotions.

Confused, Happy, Sad, Angry, Fear, Calm and Love – We looked at all these emotions and how each one makes us feel and what activities makes us feel each emotion.

In Literacy, we have looked at ‘The Enormous Turnip” which is a traditional story. These stories play a massive part in broadening the children’s vocabulary. We looked explored a giant pumpkin and painted and drew other seasonal vegetables.

We also read ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson. In these stories we learnt a lot about the animals and listened carefully to match their sounds. We created our own ladybird hats and a tasty treat.

In Maths, we have been looking at numbers in many different ways. We started with Zero and moved through from One, Two and then to Three. We took each number apart and learnt the different ways to make these numbers, we practiced the number formation along with trying to spot 2 in our area and day-to-day lives (2 socks on our feet, one nose but two nostrils etc.). We have started to learn about the part part-whole model of learning with numbers and also discovering relationships between the different numbers.

We have all had the chance to visit our forest area. We listened carefully to Wise Owl and are keeping ourselves safe here. This is a super place to find mini beasts look at plants and develop our muscles ad work as a team.

In Jigsaw, we have been learning about ourselves and how we are all different. We been looking at our individual likes and dislikes, our family lives and these are different and also how to behaviour (this also linked to our reading – Colour Monster).

In Fundamental Movement Skills, we have been practicing our 5 movement skills these include running, jumping, throwing and hopping. The fifth is skipping which we’ll work on once we have have mastered our hopping – these skills link.

In RE, we have been learning about role-models and who our role-models are in life. We discussed family and then discussed it in a religious sense of how Jesus is a role-model to Christians.

In music, we have taking part in listening games and turn taking. Keeping beats and listening to key parts of music.

We go outside to learn every day whatever the weather, here we can develop our learning on a big scale. We love to make music, solve problems, mark make and practice our counting.

We have become very independent in Gruffalo’s this term getting ourselves into our waterproofs, wellies and pumps and helping ourselves to drinks when we need them.
