English
This term we read the book ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. The book follows a man as he tries to cut down a kapok tree in the rainforest and how the animals try to persuade him not to. We thought about how we could describe the rainforest and made a list of powerful descriptive phrases. We also created a playscript to argue for and against cutting down trees in the rainforest.
Maths
This term in maths we have been looking at using formal methods to multiply and divide large numbers. We learnt how to partition a number to multiply it more easily and how some dividing questions create a remainder. We also took part in number day and learnt the importance of the Fibonacci sequence in spirals are how to use a compass.
Geography
In geography, we have looked at sustainability. We have talked about what activities are sustainable such as creating electricity using wind power and what activities are unsustainable such as burning coal or oil. We also talked about how our school could be more sustainable and why this is important in our world. Looking at the wider world, we looked at how solar cookers are helping people in Nepal live more sustainable live by reducing how much wood they burn and as such given them more time in the day as they don’t have to collect wood either.
Science
For our science we looked at electrical circuits and how electricity travels round them. We talked about conductors and insulators and how different switches work to brake and circuit. We will be using this knowledge to help up in our next DT project.
RE
In RE we looked at the question ‘Could the Buddha’s teaching make the world a better place. We talked about what is good and bad in the world and why people sometimes suffer. We then looked at the Buddha’s teachings on how to be a good person and discussed how a Buddhist may live their lives as a result. We also thought abut how we can make the world a better place ourselves.
PE & Swimming
We have been lucky to have a Rugby coach in this term to teach us some skills in preparation for playing games of tag rugby. We have also been practicing our swimming skills and having a lot of fun in the water.
Computing
In computing we have learnt how to use and make spreadsheets. We looked at the different things spreadsheets can do and what purposes they can have in people’s everyday lives.
