This Summer term, has been packed full of engaging activities and stimulating lessons across various subjects, each designed to further enrich our students’ educational journeys.

English

In English, we introduced a new book titled  “How To Be A Viking”. This engaging book tells the story of a Viking boy and his fear of the sea. Linking into our history work the children have gained insights into Viking culture and also engaged in creative rewriting. Each child has chosen their own character and developed an entirely new fear for them to confront. This imaginative twist has encouraged students to structure their own version of the tale, culminating in a written piece that has been recorded in their presentation books. We have also looked at different types of texts such as Fact Files and Diaries.

Maths

Mathematics this term has been a journey through various concepts such as plotting co-ordinates, working with area and measurement, and converting measurements e.g. centimetres, metres, and kilometres. Students also solidified their understanding of place value and decimals, reinforcing these foundational elements of numeracy.

DT

In Design Technology (DT), our theme this half term has been “Pavilions”. Students have explored basic structures and have been able to experiment with various designs to create stable, strong, and robust models. We used marshmallows and cocktail sticks in this experimental stage of the learning. After thorough design and planning sessions, they have moved forward to construct a 3D Pavilion of their own, they considered a theme and a target audience in the design stage and then built their pavilions using the knowledge they had learned. Finally, they added cladding to their structure using various materials and techniques. This enhanced the pavilion’s aesthetics and functionality.

RE

Religious Education (RE) The children have been studying the Muslim event of Ramadan. The concepts of Saum, focusing on why Muslims fast, have been explored in depth, alongside discussions about The Night of Power and how fasting signifies a profound commitment to God. This topic offers a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on the importance of faith and self-discipline.

History

In History, students will embark on a fascinating journey back to the time of The Vikings. Linked to our English work we have investigated significant historical contents, including the various kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons, the ingenuity of long ships, the legacy of King Alfred (Alfred the Great) and his pivotal role in the Battle of Edington. This rich historical tapestry has cultivated an interest in history but and also helped students develop critical thinking skills through analysis of historical events.

Spanish

In Spanish, we have focused on expanding our vocabulary through the understanding of nouns. Students have enhanced their linguistic abilities, confidently expressing knowledge through the phrase “I know how to…,” to communicate their learning with ease and enthusiasm.

Science

In Science, our topic this term is sound and its properties. Students have engaged in various experiments, notably one that examines how sound fades over distance. This hands-on experience has solidified their understanding of sound waves and vibrations, allowing them to explore the fascinating world of acoustics in an informative and enjoyable manner.

Music

In Music this half term Hogwarts have been looking at improvisation. We have listened to Train-is-a-coming on Charanga, had a go at playing the keyboard part 3 and then used the keyboards to improvise.

We wrote the note names, found the correct keys and helped our music work partner to play the first bars of the piece. We then either sat or stood, held our hand over the keys and let our improvisational fingers loose!

 

Finally, our proud board displays some of the children’s best pieces of work for all to see!
