To help our children stay safe in and around water, we were delighted to welcome PCSO Liv Jones from Lancashire Constabulary. With easy access to water for our children in the local area – including the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the River Brun, and ponds in Towneley Park – this was a vital and timely session for all year groups.
Liv spoke to the children about the different types of open water and highlighted the importance of staying away from these areas unless accompanied by a trusted adult. The session was informative and engaging, with clear guidance on how to stay safe near water and what to do in an emergency.
Year 4 were especially confident in contributing to the discussion, having recently covered water safety in their swimming lessons the week before. As part of the session, children watched a River Trust video about water safety and discussed the key messages together afterwards.
The assembly was thoroughly enjoyed by all year groups and provided our children with valuable life skills. While we hope they never need to use them in an emergency, we feel confident that they are now better equipped to keep themselves and others safe near water.
